Harrogate’s own Master Kambiz R.Ali 6th Dan travelled to Belgium to compete in the 35th Belgian Poomsae Open on 5th Apr. This event saw many of the top international poomsae players from all nations represented as European ranking points were available. Poomsae is the pattern event in taekwondo, and demonstrates the movement, controlled balance and accuracy of techniques in sequence representing defence and attack of an imaginary opponent. The focus is on correct movement, accuracy and fluidity of motion and is scored by deducting points for any errors.
Harrogate Taekwondo instructor Master Ali 6th Dan won a silver medal at as part of Capital Taekwondo Academy’s team with Grandmaster Ali Alipour 7th Dan and Master Sadegh Shajirat 6th Dan. Dutch Grandmaster Ata Alavi 7th Dan who had previously won a gold medal in the German Open and silver in the World Championship was very keen to offer help and advice to Team Capital and also was special guest coach for this event. Master Ali would also like to give credit to his students (Doug Baston, Aaron Leith, Stacey Newton & Martin Squires) who have taken the learning from attending a poomsae referee course held by Grandmaster Shin 9th Dan and brought this teaching back to class to improve the standard of poomsae within the Academy.
This was a great experience for Master Ali to compete with the very best in Taekwondo and is the first stage of an exciting year for Master Ali personally as he plans to attend the Hanmadang World Championship in Korea later in the year. The Hanmadang is an annual event that promotes Taekwondo for all, with competitions for individual techniques to highlight the power and grace of this martial art. Master Ali is currently in training for the fist break which tests the ability to break as many concrete tiles as possible in a single strike.
